New vs. Resale Homes
When you are buying a home, there are only two options: new or used. There are options in every price range. Therefore, the determining factor is only your preferences.
New
- Can get what you want, but may cost more than buying used
- Often built safer because of technological updates to construction materials and building methods
Used
- Usually you can get more home for the same price as buying new
- You could have to remodel the home to fit your needs. You usually can get most of these costs back when you resell it
- May have upgrades that are nicer than builder’s standards
- Neighborhood is established and looks complete. Schools and safety level are unlikely to fluctuate as much as in a new community.
- Materials used to build home may not be up to today’s building standards. They could have problems such as lead paint and radon.
